Factors Affecting Adult Learners

There are many factors that affect adult learners and their ability to be successful in an online class. Donahue, Fox, & Terrance (2007), state that eLearning makes demands on adult learners that are quite different from the demands of a face-to-face classroom. According to Donahue et al. (2007), many adult learners come to their first online learning experience with a mixture of curiosity, excitement, apprehension, and fear. There is a feeling of excitement because of the convenience, flexibility, and desire to connect with the other classmates and instructors, and the anticipation of gaining new knowledge. There is an apprehension due to concerns about a lack of technology skills and experience, and the fear of the unknown. Please share the feelings and emotions that your felt when embarking on your first online learning experience.

I wasn't scared or leary; I love being able to use the computer and technology to get ahead when just 15 years ago there weren't alot of computers in the workplace let alone at home. I feel blessed! All you have to fear about computers is your own lack of imagination!

I have to admit ... I was nervous at first beginning online courses versus the traditional classroom setting. Fortunately, the professors and other students have been very helpful along the way. Now, I have learned more about several computer programs than I ever thought possible!

I was apprehensive at first and I still feel a sense of trepidation at the start of each semester but the instructors and other students have been a great help. I'm learning more what to expect and becoming more comfortable.

I was concerned because I haven't been in school in so long, but frankly I was relieved that I wouldn't be expected to be social on a face-to-face level. :)

I thought about what kinds of challenges I may encounter while participating in an on-line class. Truth be told, it took me longer than I anticipated to complete the assigned tasks.

In the face-to-face setting, I could assemble my thoughts and begin working on the assignment while listening to the lecture. That was not an option while doing my first "online" course.

Time and repeated use of various online courses has proven to be a friend to my learning capabilities. I enjoy the work very much!

I am enjoying the online experience now that it is familiar.
